Cauliflowers and Britain’s downfall

Francis Sedgemore, Tuesday 16 February 2010

The UK’s economic troubles explained

“Higher fuel and transport costs also pushed the CPI up, and last month’s cold weather increased some vegetable prices, with the cost of cauliflowers rising by the highest amount since 1996.”

When it comes to economic reporting in the UK, I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. For the last week or so we’ve had non-stop stories about Greece’s woes, and how big bad Germany is forcing the plucky little ouzo drinkers to adopt austerity measures in order to shore up the evil euro.

While eurozone states are struggling with the tail end of the recession, with varying degrees of success, the Brits are almost completely ignoring their own bleak financial outlook.

Other than rising inflation, that is.

I almost envy the Greeks.
