The Archbeard's take on "original sin" is, shall we say, nuanced. Call it false pride, if you like, for that is what he means. That, and spiritual idolatry. In the circumstances I don't object to Williams' magic-friendist terminology. For example, from that same interview, he said: "There is, inbuilt into human beings, a sort of dangerous taste for unreality", which I can buy into without too much hesitation. But a moment before, he apparently puts the cause of this propensity down to Original Sin... Er, say what? Well, yes, he does, but then he goes and says something that illustrates the complete gulf that lies between us. For example, from that same interview, he said:
