“Las masas se animan con el espectáculo en la City de Londres”

On the first of April of this year I posted a reflection on the G20 summit demonstration I attended in London. The article attracted attention in the form of comments sent to me by email, including one from Marcela Sariego: a journalist and freelance Spanish translator based in England.
Marcela asked if she could take my article, translate it into her native Castilian, and publish the translation on her website as part of a sample portfolio. I readily agreed to this request, and the result can be seen here.
This piece was chosen as it makes heavy use of idiom and humour, which I know from experience can be challenging to translate into another language, even where the two cultures are similar.

Well done sir. I can’t read Spanish but I’ll readily believe that it’s a decent translation that preserves the humour.

I can read Catalan better than I can Castilian, but I can clearly see how Marcela has approached this translation. The problem with writing such as this lies in translating the culture, but I was under the impression that Stephen Fry is known and loved by all throughout our sceptred orb. How parochial of me.
