As honest as the day is long

Hazel Blears - “...as honest as the day is long”

I doubt there will be any political scalps as a result of today’s revelations by the Daily Telegraph that UK government ministers have been stretching the parliamentary expenses system to its limit. But it says something about our political leadership’s moral compass, and will no doubt further public distrust of politicians and the democratic process.

Within this new ‘scandal’, one quote in particular – from the office of Communities Secretary Hazel Blears – caught my eye:

“Hazel is honest as the day is long.”

Ms Blears is a little older than me, but we are both of the same generation. What strikes me is that for many if not most of us on the shady side of 40, the day is not very long at all. In fact its length is ever decreasing, along with our attention to detail.
