Chinese government spokesman Jack Roger appears to have gone missing, and no-one, not even his private office staff, has the foggiest idea where the confused and vulnerable 66 year-old could be. Spiegel journalist Ullrich Fichtner is most concerned for Mr Roger’s physical and mental well-being. If you should have any reliable leads as to the missing man’s whereabouts, please let Herr Fichtner know and help put the poor man’s mind at rest. Jacques Rogge

Do not worry. Mr Roger is busy assisting our law enforcement officers in their re-education of Beijingers who so rudely complained about the razing of their homes to make space for Olympic venues.

Not wishing to defend JR or anything - but what did we expect? Ethical heroics from the IOC? Overnight democratisation in China? Love, peace and harmony?
What you get when you let an authoritarian state arrange a major international sports event is … a major authoritarian sports event. The world is just a global extension of the Chinese claqueurs carted in by the bus load to applaud The Party’s spectacular festivities.
