Turkey moves to silence dissenting diva

Bulent Ersoy

The quasi-military government democratically-sanctioned judicial authority in EU-applicant Turkey is again using law to stifle dissent.

This time it’s transsexual singer Bulent Ersoy, who on television last year remarked that it was not worth sacrificing soldiers’ lives in Turkey’s conflict with Kurdistan. Ersoy has been charged with attempting to turn public against military, and faces a four-and-a-half year stretch if convicted.

Ersoy has said she will stand by her comments. Quite right; the conflict is not worth one more Turkish life as Kurdistan does not belong to Turkey.
